Immigration Documents

The CCO can assist Canadians working on our development assistance program to obtain proper legal standing in Tanzania (please see CCO Services).

However, to smooth the process and avoid time-consuming and more expensive processing, please study the information below to determine what kind of permit you require and what essential documentation you must provide. Tanzania is a very warm and welcoming country, but Immigration is firm in application of the law and foreigners are expected to abide.

  • Visitor Visa - required by individuals who are not intending to work, study or trade in Tanzania (i.e. tourists and casual visitors). It can be obtained from the Tanzania High Commission in Ottawa or at the Dar es Salaam or Arusha airports upon arrival. Permits at maximum 90 day stay. A Visa Extension may be sought from the Tanzania Immigration Office for an additional maximum 2 months.
  • Residence Permit Class "C" - required by any Canadians working as staff, volunteers, interns etc. posted on projects not in the CIDA bilateral program. This includes NGO personnel working with funding from Canadian Partnership Branch. Maximum duration of stay is 2 years.
  • Exemption Certificate - required by Canadians working on CIDA bilateral programs. These programs are covered by the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Canada and Government of Tanzania. Maximum duration of stay is 2 years.
  • Research Permit - required by anyone undertaking research in Tanzania. Note that this is an authority (pre-requisite) for a Residence Permit Class "C", which is also required.
